POINT Clare residents were treated to spectacular helicopter rescue drills on Brisbane Water yesterday.

The crew of the NRMA CareFlight helicopter teamed up with the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol in a rescue exercise designed to hone liferaft deployment and water rescue skills.

New boat rescue techniques developed by the national rescue centre of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority were tested.

NRMA CareFlight is one of the designated rescue helicopter units on call to the maritime authority.

The service also undertakes trauma and medical pick-ups around NSW in partnership with NSW Health.

The exercise demonstrated the new liferaft dropping technique that the authority has made a national standard.
